Troubleshooting Fault Code 0254 (Red Lamp – Stop/Shutdown Engine)

Step 1: Connect to Cummins INSITE

  1. Open Cummins INSITE software.
  2. Connect the adapter to the engine’s diagnostic port.

Step 2: Check Fault Codes

  1. Open the Fault Codes window on the Viewbar.
  2. Check the Active Codes status.

Figure 1.5 – Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid

a) Check for Corrosion

  • Inspect the solenoid post for corrosion.
  • Result: No corrosion found.

b) Check Supply Voltage

Condition:

  • Disconnect the actuator harness from the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid.
  • Turn the keyswitch ON.

Action:

  • Measure voltage from the fuel shutoff control wire connector (harness side) to the engine block ground.
  • Results:
    • Without actuator harness connected: 21.56 VDC (OK).
    • With actuator harness connected: 3.6 VDC (Not OK – Indicates a short circuit).
    • Expected: Voltage should remain 21.56 VDC when harness is connected.

c) Inspect Actuator Harness and ECM Connector Pins

Conditions:

  • Turn the keyswitch OFF.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness connector from the ECM.

Action:

  • Check for:
    • Loose connectors
    • Corroded, bent, broken, pushed-back, or expanded pins
    • Moisture, dirt, or debris in connectors
    • Missing or damaged connector seals
    • Broken connector shell
    • Wire insulation damage

d) Check for Open Circuit

Conditions:

  • Turn the keyswitch OFF.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness from the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness connector from the ECM.

Action:

  • Measure resistance from pin 33 of the actuator harness to the fuel shutoff control wire.
  • Expected result: Less than 10 ohms (OK).

e) Check for Short Circuit (Pin to Pin)

Conditions:

  • Turn the keyswitch OFF.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness from the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness connector from the ECM.

Action:

  • Measure resistance from pin 33 of the actuator harness connector to all other pins.
  • Expected result: More than 100k ohms (OK).

f) Measure Voltage from ECM

Conditions:

  • Disconnect the actuator harness connector from the ECM.
  • Turn the keyswitch ON.

Action:

  • Measure voltage from pin 33 of the actuator harness connector to engine block ground.
  • Result: 21.56 VDC (OK).

g) Check Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid Resistance

Conditions:

  • Turn the keyswitch OFF.
  • Disconnect the actuator harness from the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid.

Action:

  • Measure resistance from the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid to engine block ground.
  • Expected values:
    • 6-15 ohms for 12-VDC solenoids.
    • Measured actual: 6-8 ohms (Not OK).

h) Replace the Fuel Shutoff Valve Solenoid

  • Replace with P/N 3408421.
