PTO Set Up

CUMMINS engines support various PTO (Power Take-Off) operation modes, including:

  • Cab PTO Switches
  • Remote Station PTO Switches
  • Remote PTO Switch
  • Accelerator Override in PTO
  • Vehicle Speed Control in PTO
  • PTO Pump Mode
  • Transmission-Driven PTO

Cab PTO Switches

Standard PTO control switches are hardwired in the cab or can be integrated through a multiplexed device used by the TEM.

  1. Requires the following switch inputs:
  • PTO On/Off Switch (must be “On”).
  • PTO Set Speed Switch (Decelerate Switch) or a momentary input from either switch.
  • PTO Resume Speed Switch (Accelerate Switch).
  1. Allows for variable PTO speed operation, ranging from minimum to maximum within PTO settings, with adjustable ramp rate changes.
  2. PTO is activated at one of two programmable speeds:
  • Configurable settings for PTO Set Switch Speed and PTO Resume Switch Speed.

Feature Description

Certain applications, such as cement mixers, dry bulk haulers, dump trucks, and refuse vehicles, require the engine to maintain a constant speed regardless of load. The Power Take-Off (PTO) feature enables the operator to select up to three pre-programmed engine speeds and adjust the engine speed using cruise control switches, either from the cab or remotely.

This feature remains active only when the vehicle speed is below the designated PTO maximum vehicle speed. Remote PTO operation is controlled by a separate, remote-mounted switch.

Adjustable Parameters

A). Open Cummins INSITE and connect to the CUMMINS Engine or an ECM Image.

For more details, refer to: How to Connect CUMMINS Engines Using Cummins INSITE Software.

B). From the left-side menu, select Features and Parameters. (as Figure 1.1 above).

Select the feature name in the ECM Value column to enable or disable the Power Take Off (PTO) and Remote PTO functions using the drop-down list.

Additional Switch Engine Speed

Defines an additional engine speed that can be activated while PTO is engaged, separate from the Cruise Control Set/Resume Switch. This allows for up to three different PTO speeds. The selected speed must be within the range of the Minimum and Maximum Engine Speeds.

Maximum Engine Load

Limits the maximum engine torque to protect the PTO drive and connected equipment from potential damage due to excessive torque input.

Maximum Engine Speed

Sets the highest engine speed at which PTO will function. This value must be equal to or greater than the Minimum Engine Speed.

Maximum Vehicle Speed

Allows PTO operation up to a predefined vehicle speed when the ECM detects vehicle movement.

Minimum Engine Speed

Establishes the lowest engine speed at which PTO can operate. This value must be equal to or lower than the Maximum Engine Speed.

Switch Ramp Rate

Controls how quickly the engine adjusts to a selected PTO speed or transitions between PTO speed settings when increased or decreased.

Resume Switch Engine Speed

Defines the engine speed activated when the resume switch is used while PTO is engaged. This speed can be different from the set switch speed, allowing two distinct PTO speeds. It must be within the range of Minimum and Maximum Engine Speeds.

Set Switch Engine Speed

Specifies the engine speed achieved when the set switch is activated during PTO operation. This speed must be within the range of Minimum and Maximum Engine Speeds.

Accelerator Override

Allows the operator to increase PTO speed using the accelerator pedal, up to the defined accelerator override maximum speed.

Remote PTO

When enabled, this setting permits PTO operation to be controlled from an external control panel or device outside the vehicle cab.

#Note the following:

During Power Take Off operation the accelerator is disabled unless accelerator override is enabled.

Depending on the OEM, activating the trailer brakes will deactivate the Power Take Off feature if an OEM switch is present.
