General Description

Exhaust brake system is a kind of assist brake for getting braking force by increasing exhaust gas pressure in the exhaust pipe. It is consist of exhaust brake switch, exhaust brake magnetic valve, exhaust brake valve and intake shutter.

If the exhaust brake switch is turned to “ON” position, ETCM let the exhaust magnetic valve open at the exhaust valve operation condition. Air passed through the exhaust magnetic valve pushes the butterfly valve of the exhaust brake valve to block the exhaust gas. Then, increased pressure in the exhaust pipe operate against piston head and get braking force. ETCM releases the exhaust brake whether clutch pedal switch or accelerator switch is on, or exhaust brake switch is off position

DTC Description

If exhaust brake does not operate in operating condition for more than 60 seconds, ETCM judge this as a fault and DTC is set. The possible cause may be short to power, short to ground, open circuit in harness. It is possible to drive but the exhaust brake does not work.

Monitor Scantool Data

  1. Connect scantool to Data Link Connector(DLC).
  2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
  3. Turn the electrical equipment and air conditioner OFF.
  4. Monitor “Fan clutch” parameter on the scantool.

Refer to “Exhaust brake ” parameter.

Terminal & Connector Inspection

  1. Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage.
  2. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.
  3. Has a problem been found?

    5

Yes ▶ Repair as necessary and then go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure
No ▶ Go to “Inspection and Repair” procedure.

Signal Circuit Inspection

1. Signal Voltage Inspection

(1) Leave the manifold absolute pressure sensor connector connected.

(2) IG “ON”, and set the start safety switch ON. Leave the engine “OFF”.

(3) Turn the exhaust brake switch to “ON”

(4) Measure voltage between terminal 6 of the exhaust brake harness connector and chassis ground.

  • Specification : Battery voltage

(4) Is the voltage measured within specification?

Yes ▶ Go to “Ground Circuit Inspection” procedure
No ▶ Repair short to power and then go to “Verification of Vehicle Repair” procedure.

Verification of Vehicle Repair

After a repair, it is essential to verify that the fault has been corrected.

  1. Connect scantool and select “Diagnostic Trouble Codes(DTCs)” mode.
  2. Using a scantool, clear the DTC.
  3. Operate the vehicle within DTC enable conditions in General Information.
  4. Are any DTCs present?
Yes ▶ Go to the applicable DTC procedure.
No ▶ System is performing to specification at this time
